ประติมากรรมรูปยักษ์ที่ซุ้มประตูทางเข้าพระมณฑป

  ประติมากรรมรูปยักษ์ที่ซุ้มประตูทางเข้าพระมณฑปสร้างขึ้นในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เมื่อครั้งปฏิสังขรณ์วัดพระเชตุพน ปรากฏหลักฐานในสำเนาจารึกแผ่นศิลาว่าด้วยการปฏิสังขรณ์วัดพระเชตุพนครั้งรัชกาลที่ ๓ ความว่า “แลกำแพงนั้นประกอบด้วยสิลาเขียวแผ่นใหญ่มีประตูซุ้มสามยอดไว้รูปอสูรหล่อด้วยสังกะสีผสมดีบุกสูงสามศอกคืบยืนกุมตระบองอยู่ในช่องซุ้มสองข้างประตูละสองรูปเหมือนกันทั้งสี่ประตูสี่ด้านเป็นรูปอสูรแปดรูป”

 
The Statues of Demon
at the Entrance Door Facade of Phra Mondop

  The statues of demon at the entrance door façade of Phra Mondop were sculptured in the reign of King Rama III, during the reconstruction period of the temple, as indicated in the mcopy of the stone inscription on the Reconstruction of Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram in that period, as follows :

“and the wall is composed of big green of stone ; at the three-tiered crown design door facade, there is a pair of demon statues (“Yak”) sculptured out of alloy mixture of  zinc and tin, rising to the height of 1.75 meter, each holding a club in his hands, standing on each side. Each door is decorated with two statues, so there are altogether eight statues for the four doors.”

Phaya Khon

            พญาขร เจ้ากรุงโรมคัล ผิวกายสีเขียว ทรงมงกุฎจีบ ปากขบ ตาจระเข้ โอรสองค์ที่สองของท้าวลัสเตียนกับนางรัชฎา เป็นอนุชาของทศกัณฐ์ ชายาชื่อรัชฎาสูร มีโอรสคือมังกรกัณฐ์และแสงอาทิตย์ อาวุธวิเศษคือศรจักรพาลพัง ปรากฎในเรื่องรามเกียรติ์ในตอนที่นางสำมนักขาไปทูลฟ้องว่าพระรามพระลักษณ์ข่มเหงตัดตีนสินมือทำประจาน พญาขรโกรธมากจึงยกกองทัพไปต่อสู้และได้ประลองศรกับพระราม พระรามทรงแผลงศรรามสูรไปต้องรถทรงของพญาขรพังพินาศ พญาขรถอนต้นรังและหักยอดเขาทุ่มใส่พระราม พระรามแผลงศรพรหมาสตร์ไปต้องพญาขรจนสิ้นชีวิต

            Phaya Khon, the King of Rommakhan Kingdom was the fourth son of Thao Latsatian and Ratchda. His appearance was of green skin, a grinning mouth and crocodile eyes. He always wore pleated style headgear. Phaya Khon was one of the brother of Thotsakan. He was married to Ratchadasun and they had two sons:  Mangkonkan and Saeng Athit. The weapon of his choice was an arrow, named Chakkraphanphang He appeared in the story of the Ramakian whe Samnanakkha went to complain to him that she abused by Phra Ram who then cut off her feet and hands in order to defame her. That made Phaya Khon very angry and he prepared his troops to fight Phra Ram. They fought exchanging arrows until the chariot of Phaya Khon was hit and fell apart. Phaya Khon continued to fight by pulling thorns off the Sal tree and breaking off mountain tips to use as weapons by throwing them at Phra Ram, but he was finally killed with the arrow of Phra Ram.
