On 28 October 2025 (B.E. 2568), marking the 60th Anniversary of Nostra Aetate,
Cardinal George Jacob Kwakade, President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue,
invited the monastic delegation from Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm Rajwaramahaviharn (Wat Pho)
to participate in the celebration under the theme
“Walking Together in Hope.”
The delegation was led by Somdet Phra Maha Thiracharn,
Member of the Supreme Sangha Council, Chief of the Northern Region,
and Abbot of Wat Pho.
This historic moment continues the friendship begun in 1972 (B.E. 2515),
when Somdet Phra Wannarat (Pun Punnasiri), then Abbot of Wat Pho
(later His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand),
became the first Thai Buddhist monk to meet Pope Paul VI at the Vatican —
a milestone in Buddhist–Christian dialogue lasting over five decades.
First promulgated in 1965 (B.E. 2508), Nostra Aetate remains a cornerstone of interreligious understanding,
affirming that the Catholic Church “rejects nothing that is true and holy in other religions.”
It calls all faiths to work together in peace, understanding, and human fraternity.
