The Statues of Demon
at the Entrance Door Facade of Phra Mondop

The statues of demon at the entrance door façade of Phra Mondop were sculptured in the reign of King Rama III, during the reconstruction period of the temple, as indicated in the mcopy of the stone inscription on the Reconstruction of Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram in that period, as follows :

and the wall is composed of big green of stone ; at the three-tiered crown design door facade, there is a pair of demon statues (“Yak”) sculptured out of alloy mixture of  zinc and tin, rising to the height of 1.75 meter, each holding a club in his hands, standing on each side. Each door is decorated with two statues, so there are altogether eight statues for the four doors.”

Satthasun

Satthasun was the King of Atsadong Kingdom. His features appear as a pale red skin, a grinnig mouth and crocodile eyes. He normally wore a pleated headgear. He was one of the allies of Thotsakan that participated in the battles. His special ability was the way that he could use the Vedas to call for Weapons from deities. He has received them from Brahman to fight enemies. In the battle with Phra Ram, Hanuman played on the ability of Satthasun by having Ongkhot and the troop of monkeys hide within a large flock of clouds to steal all the weapons dropped for Satthasun. After his friends hid as planned, Hanuman, in the features of a wild monkey, went to challenge Satthasun to fight. Satthasun called to the deities for Weapons but no weapons came down from sky because they were intercepted by the hiding monkeys. Hanuman, then took a turn calling for weapons too, and the weapons came down like a falling rain from the monkey troops. Demon troops were defeated and killed. At that same time, Hanuman fought face to face with Satthasun and beheaded him and presented the head as a victory to Phra Pam.
